About the Rincon Hill in San San Francisco, CA
The word "Rincon" means "inside corner" in Spanish. Before the 1860s, this area was a cove that extended to what is now First Street but it wasn't until 1852 when wealthy pioneers built large homes on top of Rincon Hill for its views overlooking San Francisco Bay as well as being close enough so they could enjoy strolls through town without having too far walked from home. With the development of Rincon Hill, homes were turned into rooming houses and many hospitals. These included Irish, German, French, British, Italian, and Swiss. The fire in 1906 destroyed what has left of this formerly wealthy neighborhood on Rincon Hill and much of this property was lost.
