Address: 1701 Divisadero Street, San Francisco, California 94115, United States

The University of California, San Francisco (UCSF) is a research university in San Francisco, California that earns public land grants. It is part of the framework of the University of California and it is completely devoted to health science. It is a significant medical and biological research and teaching hub.

In 1864, UCSF was founded as Toland Medical College, and it joined the University of California in 1873, becoming its Medical Department. In the same year, the California College of Pharmacy was incorporated and a dentistry school was founded in 1881. In both Berkeley and San Francisco, his facilities were located. In 1964, as a campus of the UC system headed by a chancellor, the school achieved full administrative independence, and it gained its current name in 1970. It built a second major campus in the newly redeveloped Mission Bay in the early 2000s, traditionally centered at Parnassus Heights and many other locations throughout the area. As of October 2018, ten Nobel laureates have been affiliated with UCSF as faculty members or researchers, and the University has been the site of many scientific breakthroughs.

U.S. as of 2020-21 UCSF Medical Center News & World Report is the state of California’s third-best hospital (standing behind UCLA Medical Center and Cedars-Sinai Medical Center, which are both located in Los Angeles). UCSF is the San Francisco Bay Area’s second largest public agency employer, with 25,398 workers. Patients and qualified residents have been served by the UCSF faculty at the San Francisco General Hospital since 1873 and at the San Francisco VA Medical Center for over 50 years. 19 PhD programs, 11 MS programs, two certificates, and a physical therapy program are offered by the UCSF Graduate Division.

Academics

In its Schools of Medicine, Pharmacy, Nursing, and Dentistry, the Graduate Branch, and its hundreds of related laboratories, the University of California, San Francisco is unique among the University of California campuses in that it conducts only biomedical and patient-centered research. In medical science, public service, and patient care, the university is renowned for creativity. Five Nobel Prize recipients, 31 members of the National Academy of Sciences, 69 members of the Institute of Medicine, and 30 members of the Academy of Arts and Sciences are members of UCSF’s faculty. UCSF offers several degrees, including a Master of Science, Doctor of Philosophy, Doctor of Pharmacy, Doctor of Medicine, Doctor of Dental Surgery, and Doctor of Physical Therapy in a variety of fields.

Rankings

UCSF is considered one of the world’s preeminent medical and life sciences universities. In 2019, the Academic Ranking of World Universities, published annually by Shanghai Jiaotong University, ranked UCSF 1st in the world for Clinical Medicine and 2nd in the world for Pharmacy. Previously, UCSF had been second in the world for Clinical Medicine and Pharmacy from 2007–2015, ceding the #2 position to the University of Washington in 2016. The professional schools of the University of California, San Francisco are among the top in the nation, according to current U.S. News & World Report graduate school and other rankings.

The schools also rank at or near the top in research funding from the National Institutes of Health. Among U.S. medical schools, UCSF is ranked 6th for research and ranked 2nd for clinical training in the primary care specialties (internal medicine, family medicine, and pediatrics) by U.S. News and World Report.

The UCSF Medical Center is the nation’s 8th-ranked hospital and California’s 3rd highest-ranked hospital (behind UCLA Medical Center and Cedars-Sinai Medical Center, which are both located in Los Angeles) according to U.S. News & World Report.

Address: 800 Chestnut Street, San Francisco, California 94133, United States

In San Francisco, California, the San Francisco Art Institute (SFAI) is a private contemporary art college. Founded in 1871, SFAI is one of the United States’ oldest art schools and the oldest west of the Mississippi River. There are about 400 undergraduates and 200 graduate students enrolled. The institution is a member of the Association of Independent Colleges of Art and Design and is accredited by the Western Association of Schools and Colleges (WASC) and the National Association of Schools of Art and Design (NASAD) (AICAD).

Diversity Statement

A rigorous artistic and intellectual community is enriched by diversity and inclusion. We promote artistic and intellectual freedom by fostering environments that value our diverse students, faculty, and staff and provide all community members with a respectful and challenging space in which to address divergent opinions and ideas.

By “diversity,” we mean that our community prospectively embraces differences in gender expression and identity, age, culture, ethnicity, race, sexual orientation, physical ability, learning style, religion, occupation, nationality, immigration status, socio-economic status, and the many forms of composite subjectivity and life experience that span these differences. Promoting such a broadly inclusive understanding of diversity requires ongoing education and effort, to ensure support, understanding, and awareness from all community members. In this, SFAI strives to move beyond the reactive methodologies of affirmative action, even as we proactively practice equal opportunity in hiring and admissions.

SFAI seeks to be a vanguard institution with regard to how we address and integrate notions of diversity. The Institute continues to develop connections and mutually beneficial relationships between the school’s immediate community and local and global publics in the belief that a multiplicity of voices has helped to make SFAI the influential and inspiring institution that it is today.

Exhibitions and Public Programs

Direct access to exhibits, seminars, symposia, films, and other special interdisciplinary activities is provided to students. Such activities link students to the wider community of musicians, literature, and contemporary ideas as an integral part of campus life. Exhibitions, seminars, and other alternative and creative outlets for presenting work by international contemporary artists are located in the Walter and McBean Galleries (on the 800 Chestnut Street campus). In a variety of spots on SFAI’s two campuses, including the Diego Rivera Gallery, students also have the opportunity to demonstrate their work.

Potential Closure

The school declared on March 23, 2020, that it would stop accepting new students for the following fall semester due to the lack of a sizeable endowment, falling enrollment rates, high real estate prices, and a dependency on income from campus property rentals, which was compounded by the COVID-19 pandemic in the United States. Shortly after the failed merger negotiations, the institute celebrated its 149th birthday on Thursday, March 26, 2020. They briefly announced that before changing their decision and allowing for online and offline classes over the next school year, the fall semester was canceled.

The board and administration reported in July 2020 that an agreement had been reached to retain all tenured faculty for the coming academic year after receiving $4 million in donations, resulting in the continuation of courses for the next academic year and the reinstatement of the degree program for those within a year of graduation.

The Conservatory of Music of San Francisco (SFCM) is a private music school in San Francisco, California. At the school, which also includes a Pre-College Division for young musicians, about 400 undergraduate and graduate students are enrolled.

They give students the structure and foundation at the San Francisco Conservatory of Music to excel in their studies and careers, providing a path of lifelong learning. More than any other world-class conservatory, with an integrated curriculum that breaks down barriers between the intellectual, the artist, the professional, and the individual, they concentrate on educating the whole person. Their faculty, services, and location at the heart of the music scene in San Francisco have allowed SFCM to take a leading role in the 21st-century musician’s preparation and concept.

Mission & Vision Statement

As a professional school, we are committed to providing an extraordinary education that prepares our graduates to pursue fully engaged lives as citizens of the world. Our core mission is to transform our students: artistically, intellectually, professionally, and individually. Through the study of music at the highest level, our students learn to seek achievement in every endeavor, to convert challenge into opportunity, to understand the nature of excellence, and to pursue their dreams with vigor and determination. We believe that inspiring the imagination, cultivating the artist, honing the intellect, and developing the professional are the keys to launching innovative graduates who excel in any field. Our phenomenal faculty and our location in the heart of a magnificent city provide an experience that is unparalleled anywhere else in the world.

Our focus is our students, and through an innovative and unique experience, the San Francisco Conservatory of Music prepares its graduates for a lifetime of achievement and success.

History

The San Francisco Conservatory of Music was founded as the Ada Clement Piano School by Ada Clement and Lillian Hodghead in 1917. Its first place, at 3435 Sacramento Street, was Lillian’s parents’ home. With three pianos, four studios, two blackboards, and 40 students, the school opened.

The School of Ada Clement Piano grew rapidly. The name was changed to the Ada Clement Music School some years after its establishment, and then to the San Francisco Conservatory of Music in 1923. In 1956, the Conservatory moved to 1201 Ortega Street from Sacramento Street, the home of a former child shelter. For fifty years, it lived there before moving to its next site at 50 Oak Street in 2006. It moved to the Bowes Center at 100 Van Ness in 2020.

Transforming the musician

SFCM learners are given the rare opportunity from day one to explore a wide variety of musical and academic disciplines while gaining dedicated training in their specialty. By conceptual experimentation, intensive artistic preparation is balanced.

Experience a related sequence of learning, a curricular initiative that includes history, theory, and humanities, as well as performances that illustrate the correlation between these domains. The core theme of each semester combines the academic, the creative, and the historical. Conversation and partnership inevitably spring up. Performances illuminate thoughts.

Address: 2130 Fulton Street, San Francisco, California 94117, United States

A premier Jesuit university, the University of San Francisco is a representation of the inclusive, inspiring, creative city that surrounds it. They have an education that is deeply personal and intellectually rigorous for students from all backgrounds.

For them, it is complementary to reason, faith, science, and spirituality. With a sense of awe and wonder, their students see the universe and search for answers to the most difficult questions in the world.

Vision

The University of San Francisco will be internationally recognized as a premier Jesuit Catholic, urban university with a global perspective that educates leaders who will fashion a more humane and just world.

Mission

The core mission of the university is to promote learning in the Jesuit Catholic tradition. The university offers undergraduate, graduate, and professional students the knowledge and skills needed to succeed as persons and professionals, and the values and sensitivity necessary to be men and women for others.

The university will distinguish itself as a diverse, socially responsible learning community of high-quality scholarship and academic rigor sustained by a faith that does justice. The university will draw from the cultural, intellectual, and economic resources of the San Francisco Bay Area and its location on the Pacific Rim to enrich and strengthen its educational programs.

History

Established in 1855 as St. Ignatius Academy by the Jesuits, USF began in what later became downtown San Francisco as a one-room schoolhouse along Market Street. Anthony Maraschi’s father, S.J. was the founder and first president of the college (1820-1897), a scholar, the treasurer of the college, and the first pastor of the church of St. Ignatius. St. Ignatius Academy received its charter to grant college degrees from the State of California on April 30, 1859, under Maraschi and signed by Governor John B. Weller. The school changed its name to St. Ignatius College that year.

Greek, Spanish, Latin, English, French, Italian, algebra, arithmetic, history, geography, elocution, and bookkeeping were included in the original curriculum.

To replace the first frame structure, a new building was built in 1862. The first Bachelor of Arts degree was awarded by the university in June 1863. In 1880, on the corner of Hayes Street and Van Ness Road, the college relocated from Market Street to a new location (currently occupied by the Davies Symphony Hall).

During the 1906 San Francisco earthquake, the Third St. Ignatius College sustained minor damage but was destroyed in the ensuing fire. The campus moved west, near Golden Gate Park, to the corner of Hayes and Shrader Avenues. Over the next 21 years, it occupied a hastily built structure known as the Shirt Factory (for its similarity to similar manufacturing buildings of the era). In 1927, on the site of a former Masonic Cemetery, the college moved to its present site on Fulton Street.

St. Ignatius College changed its name to the University of San Francisco in order to mark its diamond jubilee in 1930. Many alumni organizations and long-time San Francisco Mayor James Rolph Jr. wanted the move from college to university.

A male-only school for much of its existence, in 1964 USF became entirely coeducational, although as early as 1927 women began attending the evening programs in business and law. The high school branch, already completely independent from the university, moved to the western part of San Francisco in 1969 and became the Preparatory of St. Ignatius College. In 1978, Lone Mountain College was purchased by the university. October 15, 2005, marked the 150th anniversary of the founding of the university. In the fall of 2017, USF enrolled 11,080 undergraduate and graduate students in four schools (Law, Administration, Education, Nursing, and Health Professions) and one college in all of its programs (Arts and Sciences).

San Francisco State University is a public university in San Francisco (commonly known as San Francisco State, SF State, and SFSU). The university offers 118 separate bachelor’s degrees, 94 master’s degrees, and 5 doctoral degrees as part of the 23-campus California State University system, along with 26 teaching certificates from six academic colleges.

In 1899, the university was founded as a normal state-run school for teacher training, gaining state college status in 1921 and state university status in 1972. Located in the southwest part of the city, less than two miles from the Pacific coast is the 141-acre campus. San Francisco State has 12 varsity athletic teams that participate, many as members of the California Collegiate Athletic Association, at the NCAA Division II level.

Academic Mission and Goals

San Francisco State University honors its origins from the heart of a diverse city, supports intellectual and personal growth, promotes equality, and inspires the courage to lead, build, and innovate.

SF State is a big urban public university located in one of the great cities in the world. The University provides extensive, rigorous, and integrated academic programs that enable students to participate in open-minded inquiry and reflection, building on a century-long tradition of dedication to quality teaching and wide access to undergraduate and graduate education. SF State encourages its students, faculty, and employees to fully interact grow, and share information with the community.

SF State equips its students to face the demands of the 21st century, motivated by the diversity of our society that includes many first-generation college students, and the courage of an academic community that seeks to break down conventional boundaries. With the unwavering dedication to social justice that is fundamental to the university’s work, SF State prepares its students with a global perspective to become effective, ethical, committed citizens.

Athletics

The intercollegiate athletics teams of the school, known as the Gators, play in NCAA Division II and are part of the California Collegiate Athletic Association (wrestling competes in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference). SF State fields twelve sports: cross country for men and women, soccer for men and women, volleyball for women, basketball for men and women, baseball for men, wrestling, indoor track and field, outdoor track and field, and softball.

Three Major League Baseball players have been developed by SF State, two of whom became All-Stars (former Mets shortstop Bud Harrelson, and former Brewers and Red Sox outfielder Tommy Harper). One player has joined the professional ranks of the soccer program. Jared MacLane played in Santa Cruz, Bolivia, in the Elite First Division soccer.

Thirteen National Football League stars, including Billy Baird, Elmer Collett, Maury Duncan, Carl Kammerer, Douglas Parrish, and Floyd Peters, were also created by The Gators. As Offensive Coordinator of the team in 1981, Mike Holmgren got his college coaching career. In 1995, the football program ended.

With two campuses in California, one in San Francisco and one in Oakland, the California College of the Arts (CCA) is an art, design, architecture, and writing institution. Established in 1907, it enrolls approximately 1,500 undergraduates and 500 graduate students.

History

During the height of the Arts and Crafts movement, CCA was founded in 1907 by Frederick Meyer in Berkeley as the School of the California Guild of Arts and Crafts. As a reaction to the industrial aesthetics of the machine age, the Arts and Crafts movement emerged in Europe during the late 19th century. An integrated approach to literature, architecture, and craft was promoted by adherents of the movement. Today, the “practical art school” of Frederick Meyer is an internationally recognized and respected institution, attracting students from around the world.

In 1908 the school was renamed California School of Arts and Crafts, and in 1936 it became the California College of Arts and Crafts (CCAC).

In 1922, when Meyer purchased the four-acre James Treadwell estate at Broadway and College Avenue, the college’s Oakland campus was acquired. Two of its buildings are on the Historic Places National Register. The more conventional, design-oriented studios such as art glass, jewelry metal arts, printmaking, drawing, sculpture, and ceramic programs are still located on the Oakland campus.

In 1940, a Master’s program in Fine Arts was created. The university changed its name to California College of the Arts in 2003.

Academics

22 undergraduate and 13 graduate majors are offered by CCA. CCA awards the Bachelor of Fine Arts (BFA), Bachelor of Arts (BA), Bachelor of Architecture (BArch), Master of Fine Arts (MFA), Master of Arts (MA), Master of Architecture (MArch), Master of Advanced Architectural Design (MAAD), Masters of Design (MDes) and Master of Business Administration (MBA) degrees.

The CCA Wattis Institute for Contemporary Arts, housed in a new facility on Kansas St. near the San Francisco campus, is a forum for contemporary culture. A new owner, Anthony Huberman, formerly of Artist’s Space in New York, was hired by the Wattis Institute in 2013.The

U.S. In 2018, The California College of the Arts was named the 15th best fine arts program in the United States by News and World Report (tied with Stanford University and Temple University). CCA is classified by PayScale as the #1 art school for return on investment in the United States and #4 for average alumni salary (bachelor’s degree).

Address: 200 McAllister Street, San Francisco, California 94102, United States

Hastings College of Law (UC Hastings or Hastings), the University of California, is a public law school affiliated with the University of California system in San Francisco, California. Founded by Serranus Clinton Hastings in 1878, UC Hastings was the University of California’s first law school and one of the first law schools established in the United States of California and Western America. UC Hastings, while part of the University of California, is not directly controlled by the University of California Regents. UC Hastings is also one of the few prominent university-affiliated law schools in the United States that does not share a campus with the university’s undergraduates or other postgraduate programs.

Academics

UC Hastings offers a three-year Juris Doctor program with concentrated studies available in seven areas: civil litigation, criminal law, international law, public interest law, taxation, family law, and recently, a new concentration in intellectual property law. Most J.D. students follow a traditional three-year plan. During the first year, students take required courses as well as one elective course. In the second and third years, students may take any course or substitute or supplement their courses with judicial externships or internships, judicial clinics, or study abroad. The college also offers a one-year LL.M. degree in U.S. legal studies for students holding law degrees from foreign law programs. It is an American Bar Association (ABA) approved law school since 1939.

UC Hastings participates in the Concurrent Degree Program with UC Santa Cruz’s Masters of Science in Applied Economics and Finance. In this 3+3 program, students may concurrently earn a JD from UC Hastings and a master’s degree in applied economics and finance from Santa Cruz, by pursuing the two degrees concurrently, eligible students can earn both degrees in less time than it would take to earn them serially. UC Hastings also participates in the Concurrent Degree Program with U.C. Berkeley’s Haas Graduate School of Business. Upon completion of a four-year program, the student earns a Berkeley M.B.A. degree and a J.D. degree from UC Hastings College of Law.

A joint degree program was initiated by UC Hastings College of Law and the UCSF School of Medicine of the University of California, San Francisco, and their first class of graduate students started enrolling in the Master of Law Studies (MSL) and LL.M. In services related to law, research, and health policy. For completion of the degrees, students have coursework available at each college. The UCSF/UC Hastings Consortium on Law, Science, and Health Policy is a part of this initiative.

65 Club

The former professor and dean of Hastings, Ellington Snodgrass, brought together a community of eminent scholars and jurists from the best law schools in the country. The Sixty Five Club, founded in 1940, retired accidentally at 65 from a community of brilliant minds to provide Hastings with one of the most distinguished faculties of any American law school. Roger J. Traynor and Raymond L. Sullivan of the Supreme Court of California and the U.S. were famous Hastings professors. Justice Arthur Goldberg of the Supreme Court.

Cost

For the 2018-2019 academic year, the gross cost of attendance (indicating the cost of tuition, fees, and living expenses) at UC Hastings is $49,538 for residents of California and $55,538 for non-residents. The debt-financed attendance expense calculated by the Law School Transparency for three years is $296,028. UC Hastings does not offer full-tuition scholarships.

Address: 1111 8th Street, San Francisco, California 94107, United States

The California College of the Arts draws talented students from around the globe who want to attend one of the finest schools of art and design in the United States. With creative solutions to advance culture and community, they train young, innovative students to become flexible creators.

The private non-profit college, led by President Stephen Beal, offers a rich curriculum of 22 undergraduate and 11 graduate programs and is noted for its interdisciplinary curriculum, variety of programs, and dedication to social responsibility. Students experience immersive, interdisciplinary exposure that emphasizes theory and practice, spread across two different campuses in the Bay Area, allowing them to develop the creative confidence and entrepreneurial skills required for contemporary creative practice.

Companies such as Pixar/Disney, Apple, Intel, Facebook, Gensler, Google, IDEO, Autodesk, Mattel, and Nike are greatly sought after by graduates. Many alumni have founded their own popular companies, and alumni work is included in major collections such as the Museum of Art in Los Angeles County, MoMA New York, Guggenheim Museum, Whitney Museum, SFMOMA, Washington D.C. National Gallery of Art, Library of Congress, and London Tate Modern.

Established in 1907 by Frederick Meyer, CCA is currently expanding its San Francisco campus through the award-winning design firm Studio Gang with new student housing and a new building.

Mission

CCA is a place of ingenuity and originality.

Values

As an educational and cultural institution, CCA believes in fostering the artistic and academic excellence of our students and faculty.

We cultivate intellectual curiosity and risk-taking, collaboration and innovation, compassion and integrity

As a global citizen and good neighbor, CCA believes in its role as a proponent of social justice and community engagement.

We promote diversity on our campuses by improving access and opportunities for underrepresented groups, and we see this endeavor as vitally enriching for everyone.

We value sustainability and believe that as a school of the art, we have a unique ability and an ethical responsibility to shape a culture that is more environmentally responsible.

We understand the importance of creative economies and the role of artists, designers, architects, and writers in solving social, cultural, environmental, and economic problems.

Sustainability goals

CCA has an ethical duty as a college of art and design to shape an environmentally friendly community. The people who will create the objects, places, and experiences of the future are their students. In architecture, building, processes, and education, they continually work towards sustainability.

CCA will broaden and enrich its sustainability curriculum to include all academic programs to catalyze the learning opportunities inherent in its new San Francisco campus, and the campus itself will serve as a laboratory for sustainable practice, where producers can experiment and innovate. Everywhere, learning will happen and will be clear to everyone.

The college has outlined ambitious sustainability objectives, including strategies for the following:

Water and energy generation, usage, and conservation

Healthy air quality

Environmentally safe artmaking materials and practices

CCA’s San Francisco campus has been a sustainability model since its opening in 1999, and it earned a COTE Top Ten Green Building award in 2001. Their goal is for the new, reconfigured campus of CCA to operate at an even higher level of sustainability by serving as a learning center with noticeable and understandable sustainability success for the students, faculty, staff, and others who will use it. To help achieve these goals, Studio Gang and the college are collaborating with environmental experts from the Rocky Mountain Institute and Atelier Ten.

A rapid and important increase in COVID-19 cases is occurring in San Francisco. Consequently, no new indoor classes or courses can commence with effect from noon on 29 November 2020, and until further notice by the Health Officer, unless the particular class trains students to provide essential functions or services relating to the protection of public health or safety or essential governmental functions (‘Core Essential Classes’).

San Francisco State University

Although delivering world-class education during the COVID-19 health crisis, San Francisco State University is committed to its goal of equality and social justice. In the academic year 2020-2021, the safety and health of our students, faculty, employees, and local Bay Area communities are the highest priority of the University. Consequently, our preparation efforts are motivated by the idea of having the smallest number of students, faculty, and staff on campus for in-person training and support activities. On-campus building access is strictly restricted to approved SF State employees, teachers, students, and vendors.

Their strategy aims to ensure that the institution, though in remote modalities, offers a holistic educational experience and facilitates activities. San Francisco State courses will be virtually offered for the 2020-21 academic year, with very restricted exceptions for courses that require some measure of in-person preparation or events. To meet physical distancing criteria, classrooms, and other public spaces have been reconfigured. A small number of tenants are also limited to university housing, serving only those students who need housing to continue their education. Campus activities and ceremonies have been canceled as virtual events or revamped.

City College of San Francisco

The 2021 Spring Session is now open and classes commence on 19 January 2021. Canvas will teach most Spring 2021 classes remotely, and most student services will be provided online and remotely. Following strict security procedures, these classes can be held in person.

University of San Francisco

The university decided on October 8, 2020, that for the spring 2021 semester, the classes will be predominantly remote. They will continue to coordinate their decision-making with the latest guidance provided by the Department of Public Health of San Francisco. They hope that as we expect the introduction of a safe and widely available vaccine, the spring semester will act as a bridge to reopening in fall 2021.

The university determined its plans for returning to in-person teaching for the fall 2021 semester on January 13, 2021. They will easily adapt if the situation with COVID-19, including vaccines, changes, or if public health guidance needs a change to their fall plans. They are committed to sharing their intentions with all members of their group as early as possible.

University of California San Francisco

The University of California confirmed (Jan. 11) that it plans to return to the entire framework of exclusively in-person teaching beginning in fall 2021, allowing prospective and current students and their families to recognize our goal well in advance amid the complexities of the pandemic. UC is planning to welcome students back to all its campuses this fall, with robust scientific developments and COVID-19 vaccinations soon being accessible to students, staff, and faculty, while staying diligent in all important preventive efforts and continuing to prioritize the health and well-being of the university community.
