About the Yerba Buena in San Francisco, CA

Yerba Buena was the original name for this settlement that later became San Francisco, California. Located near the northeast end of The Peninsula and between Presidio de Frisco as well mission San Francisco de Asís (Saint Francis Mission), it originally served to be a trading post for ships visiting bay area harbors during Spanish colonial times when they first arrived here from Mexico or Peru via sailing ships looking eastward across waterway through Golden Gate Bridge towards Alcatraz island located just offshore in what's now called "Bayous" beyond Patos Island.

The town's name comes from the yerba buena plant, which is a native herb to North America and abundant near San Francisco Bay. During an expedition with Father Font in 1775-76, Juan Bautista de Anza named this common west coast species after him when he noticed its abundance around there. The Spanish word hierba means "herb" while 'hierbas' is an equivalent Spanish word for both good or bad.
